Artifact: A Surreal Speakeasy in the Heart of Hong Kong

Designer Nelson Chow Crafts an Enchanting Underground Escape

Discover the allure of Artifact, a speakeasy bar that offers an immersive experience unlike any other, nestled within the bustling Central district of Hong Kong.

Artifact stands as a testament to Nelson Chow's visionary approach to design, transforming a space within BaseHall into a serene yet surreal refuge. The speakeasy's entrance, a clandestine passage marked by circular windows, sets the tone for an extraordinary journey. The design draws inspiration from the enigmatic beauty of underground cisterns, creating an atmosphere that captivates and transports guests to a realm of tranquility and mystery.

The interior of Artifact is a masterclass in illusion and ambiance. The acoustic chamber, with its speaker-like tiles, not only serves a practical purpose by insulating the space from external noise but also contributes to the bar's enigmatic charm. The design team's attention to detail is evident in the use of dim lighting and concrete textures, which evoke the feeling of an abandoned industrial site, further enhancing the bar's clandestine allure.

At the heart of Artifact lies the main bar area, where the design reaches its zenith. The rib-like structures and ambient lighting evoke the serenity of a cistern, while the mirrored ceiling and skylight play with perceptions of space and time. The result is a paradoxical setting that juxtaposes the dimly lit surroundings with the illusion of a setting sun, crafting a surreal experience that defies logic and captivates the imagination.

The realization of this design was no small feat. The intricate rib structures of the main bar were meticulously crafted using 3D moulds and fiberglass, with each section hand-painted on site to achieve the desired effect. The acoustic tiles, shaped like mini speakers, were carefully designed to not only create a visually arresting pattern but also to serve a functional acoustic purpose, showcasing the design team's innovative approach to problem-solving.

Artifact's design is a celebration of space, light, and geometry, offering an escape from the ordinary. The bar spans approximately 1400 square meters, providing ample room for guests to immerse themselves in the meticulously crafted environment. The design team, including Nelson Chow, Rain Ho, Rafael Pardo, and Brandon Fong, has created a space that is not just a bar but an experience that engages and envelops its visitors.

Since its opening in April 2023, Artifact has become a hidden gem within Jardine House, Hong Kong's architectural icon. The design's success is a result of extensive research into tranquil environments and the influence of surrealists, culminating in a space that challenges perceptions and offers a unique sensory experience. Recognized with the prestigious Golden A' Design Award, Artifact is a shining example of how design can create unforgettable experiences that resonate with guests long after they've left.
